Fix it yourself
The 2-minute bike safety check
Run through these checks before you ride, especially if the bike has been sitting for a while. It takes two minutes and catches most problems early.

Step by step
How to do it
- A — AirSqueeze both tyres. They should feel firm, with no cuts, bulges or worn patches.
- B — BrakesSqueeze each lever: it should stop well before the handlebar. Push the bike forward with the brakes on — the wheels shouldn't turn.
- C — Chain and cranksThe chain should be clean and quiet, not rusty. Wiggle the cranks sideways — there should be no knocking.
- Quick releasesCheck the wheel and seat quick-release levers are closed firmly and pointing back.
- Final checkLift the bike a few centimetres and drop it — listen for rattles. Check your lights work if it's getting dark.
Not going to plan?
Bring it in instead if…
- Anything rattles or knocks
- Brakes or gears feel wrong
- There's play in the cranks, wheels or headset
- It's been a year since its last service
